KEYWORDS IN THE INTERPRETATION AND TRANSLATION OF THE STORY
BY WILLIAM PAUL YOUNG «THE SHACK»
The interpretation of the textual content, the holistic understanding of its meaning have always been challenging objectives in linguistics. The achievement of these objectives is difficult without identification of the text keywords. They are the markers of intratextual coherence and present a specific pattern or a certain scheme of the entire text [1, p. 40].
The identification and analysis of the key words are one of the important steps in the analysis and translation of the entire text as they represent information expressed in the text in a folded and laconically minimized form. Inaccurate or incorrect translation of keywords contribute to inappropriate interpretation of the concepts that the author wanted to convey to the reader.
The aim of our study is to highlight the key words in the story «The Shack» by William Paul Young, to substantiate and explain our choice, to analyze the translation of the keywords into the Russian language, to determine the extent of its adequacy.
We have determined that the words The Shack, The Great Sadness, Papa, Sarayu, The Trinity, Jesus, love, God are the keywords of the novel «The Shack». These words can be assigned to such groups as: the human names (Sarayu, Jesus, Papa); the names of the feelings (love, The Great Sadness); the names of the objects (the shack, the cabin, settler's home, the house); Bible names (The Trinity, God, Jesus).
We have identified two groups of key words according to the principle of frequency and peculiarities of their distribution through the text: the words ‘gravitating’ to the middle and second half of the composition (The shack, The Great Sadness, The Trinity, Papa, Sarayu, Jesus); the words evenly distributed over the text (Love, God).
Translation of the key words into the Russian language is in general adequately reproduced. To transfer such lexical items as The Trinity, Jesus, God there was used conventional translation (Троица, Иисус, Бог).
The lexemes Love and Papa were translated according to their first meaning (Любовь, Папа).
Sarayu is a proper name, it is transcoded in the target language (Сарайю).
The shack is translated as хижина. According to the dictionary Lingvo the word shack has such meanings: лачуга, хижина, хибара. The first word – the shack – denotes little, poor, wretched dwelling and fits within the meaning and the stylistic coloring. However, the translator used more neutral symbolic word хижина. In our opinion, this translation is very good, since the main meaning of the word the shack in this context is not to show the mustiness and the poverty of the place but to transmit its symbolism: the earthly world meets the world of the divine here.
In the text there are some synonyms for the word the shack as the cabin (16 times), the house (2 times), the settler's home (1 time).
The keyword phrase The Great Sadness is translated as Великая Скорбь. The dictionary Lingvo proposes the following options of translation for the word Great: 1) большой, огромный, крупный; 2) великий. Thus, the translation of the first half of the phrase is completely adequate.
The word Sadness is translated in the following way: грусть, печаль, уныние. There is no such option as Скорбь. Obviously the translator tried to add some sublimity and grandiloquence to the phrase so they translated it not quite adequately using the synonym. In our opinion, the translation would not have lost its emotional coloring, if the translator used the word печаль. Thus, our translation caused by the aspiration to make the translation as adequate as possible, is the next: Великая Печаль.
Thus in our study we have identified the main paradigms of keywords which is an important step in the interpretation of the basic concept of the composition. We have determined that the translation is reproduced adequately; the keywords retain their contextual meaning.
